I liked this movie enough to say it is worth watching once. I think that the moral dilemmas presented in the film, which were more whacky than they were blasphemous, were a lot more challenging for the time. Basically everyone in the movie plays at having a stringent moral code (spoiler alert, they actually don’t), and it is a nice little conversation piece about the nature of ethics themselves.
The cultural observations, especially about churches, are definitely poignant, although I’m still sort of left with the feeling of watching a B-movie. Still, the set design, interior design, and cinematography are pretty incredible. It had the structure of a noir film at times, which is great since a lot of it takes place in an extremely ornate cemetery intended to be a Victorian-esque shangri-la.
