A movie that was filmed under Mel Gibson’s production company, then sold to Warner Brothers, then partially refilmed again! And I have to say that while the screenwriter/director has reasonable claims to them “butchering” his work (it’s not too bad), this director’s cut version is objectively inferior to the 1999 version. The soundtrack here is generic and uninteresting, the ending is mediocre, and there are plenty of things that were rightfully cut. I still say that the 1999 version is one of my favorite “action” films, and people like to argue with me about semantics. Technically it is a “thriller”, or a “neo-noir” film. Still, in the genre of Dirty Harrys and Bronsons, the 1999 version of PAYBACK is my favorite, hands down.
